Dear readers,
Over the past two years, we, the Writers of SciLance, have produced more than 270 blog posts with tips and hacks that we’ve learned as science writers. We’ve confessed our writing struggles and foibles. We’ve offered our collective advice, and we’ve asked other science writers to share their tips with you, too.
If you’re new to our site, welcome. We hope you’ll find answers to your questions. If you’ve been a long-time reader of this blog and own at least one copy of The Science Writers’ Handbook, we thank you for your support.
After a great two-year run, we’ve decided to suspend regular posting on this blog. We’re still here and actively writing on various other projects, and we haven’t ruled out a return to regular posting at a future date.
Before we say au revoir, here’s a quick guide to what you can find on this site.
- Ask SciLance: Our general science writing advice. Posts often include multiple perspectives, and topics have included writing without a science background, writing if you have a science PhD, the ethics of junkets and writing native advertising content.
- Bookshelf: Reviews of our favorite tomes and how they’ve influenced our writing and our business practices.
- Friday Snapshot: Glimpses into the writing lives of SciLancers
- News You Can Use: We weighed in on issues important to (freelance) writers including contracts, gender disparity and sexual harrassment, and health insurance.
- Q & A: Interviews include a series on applying to various science journalism graduate programs by SciLancer Stephen Ornes (bio).
- SciLance Confidential: Essays that offer advice and perspective, usually based on one SciLancer’s experience.
- SciLance Hacks!: Tools, tech, and tips for improving your writing workflow.
- Writing Labs: Our video series that offers a glimpse of our home offices.
- Tribes Report: A series of interviews with several other “writer tribes” about what makes them tick by SciLance founder, Kendall Powell (bio).
- Writing With Children: SciLance parents share their struggles and successes of writing while raising the next generation.
We hope that our existing posts will continue to be a resource to the science writing community. If you would like to comment on an existing post, we’re happy to continue the discussion. You’re also welcome to contact individual SciLancers through their bios on this site. Or you can contact the editors of this site with a general question.
May you pitch, publish, and prosper.
